Ski trip

Posted: 14th August 2013 by Bethany in Holidays

Whew, this is a long overdue post. For the July school holidays we hit the slopes on the Perisher ski hill at the snowy mountain which is about a 5 hour drive south west of Sydney. We split the drive up, stopping at Jyndabyne, about 4 hours in to spent the night and rent our ski gear. The kids enjoyed the wide open space at the lodge, running around outside – still no sign of snow though! The next day, we got up bright drove the rest of the way to the bottome of the mountain where we caught the ski-tube that took us up a steep tunnel to the top of the mountain. The ski tube train was a big hit with the kids!

We were smart in our planning as we left 3 days before the school holidays so we enjoyed a relatively quiet ski hill before the bombardment of families over the holidays. Both Ethan and Tomas went to ski school for 3 days and enjoyed every minute. Ethan was in the preschool age school where the kids were meant to be 3 years old and toilet trained. We snuck him in with a nappy on and the staff were so accommodating. There is a day care nearby so they changed him there if needed. It was seriously the most family-friendly place for a holiday!!
Tomas was in the school-age ski school. He did so well that we was put with older kids who were 8 years old. He even took a chair lift up the V8 hill and skied down. Mike and I saw that the kids were doing this and managed to get on the ski lift before the kids so we could watch the kids get off and ski down. Tomas did so well and probably showed-off a bit once he spotted us!

Ski school finished at 3pm at which time Mike and I rounded up the kids and did some skiing  with them on the bunny hill. The kids did so well! I held Ethan’s jacket as he went down the hill and he’d shout, “mummy let go” because he wanted to go faster. I let him go for a short stretch and Mike would catch him. Too cute!

The best part of the trip was that we went with our dear surrogate family. They were fantastic to spend a holiday with. We all took turns trading off so that the adults got some alone time (sans les enfants!). Mike and I snowboarded all day for 3 days together and it was amazing. We enjoyed our time together and it felt like a real holiday.

At the end of each day, the families booked a table for dinner at the lodge’s restaurant. They booked us in early as they knew our kids were hungry and that chaos would ensue if they were not fed promptly! In fact we were the only families in the restaurant at 5:30pm! I suspect they opened early just for us!

2.4 km swim!

Posted: 19th May 2013 by Bethany in random

ok, one last post about me and my swim addiction…..On April 17, 2013, I entered the last big swim of the season (and my only swim race to date!). It was a 2.4km swim in Coogee Bay that goes out to sea, around wedding cake island and back. I waited until the day of to register as I wasn’t confident I could do the swim having never swam that far – ever! But, as two of my friends were entering and they were more than encouraging, I decided to sign up! I’m glad I did. It gave me great confidence to know I could swim this distance, without getting tired while also overcoming the fear of the wide open sea……and possibility of sharks. My time was not recorded for some unknown reason, but after talking to a few people, I estimate it to be about 60 minutes – not bad for a novice! It was especially nice to have my boys there to cheer me on at the finish!

Bronze Medallion

Posted: 19th May 2013 by Bethany in random

After 6 weeks of intense training, I completed my bronze medallion in March, 2013. So, I am one of the Australian Surf Life Savers! Yay! It was a big accomplishment so I thought I’d include a short post on our family website. Being a Surf Life Saver at Coogee beach is similar to being a life guard – it’s just run by a differenct association. The ASLS patrol beaches wearing yellow and red uniforms. They are equipped with life saving equipment including surf boards, rescue floaties, and rescue motor boats to name a few. I’ll be on patrol next season and I plan to supervise the nippers, the kids group that learns water saftetly and trains in the ocean.

Here are some photos from my training and practical exam. There’s also a video link from the day of the practical exam. It was fun!

Camping in April

Posted: 25th April 2013 by Bethany in Holidays

Camping in April was a bit of a long shot as the weather is unpredictable this time of year. Somehow I managed to select the few days where we had wind and rain over the entire sunny school holidays!

We went to our favourite spot in the Royal National Park, the Bonivale Campground, an hour’s drive south of Coogee. A highlight for Mike and I was seeing one of the two  monotremes living in Australia on our drive into the park – an echidna! The other monotreme is the platypus which we were lucky enough to see three years ago while we were in Tasmania. The echidna was looking for ants along the side of the road so we pulled over to have a closer look. It wasn’t afraid of us so we got pretty close. It was super cute! Too bad my camera phone doesn’t do it justice! Also too bad the kids missed seeing it as they were asleep in the car.

We camped with three of our favourite families and booked sites within a quadrant so that we could mark off areas for the tents and a communal eating or hang-out area at the centre. It all seemed so perfect on Thursday April 18th, the sun shone brightly – there was no sign of the storm to come. Then Friday a terrible wind blew but it was still sunny and the kids weren’t bothered. They swam and ran around on bikes for the most part, although Tomas and Benny (who was the oldest child there at 10 years of age) played “imagination DS”. As far as I could tell, it was an imagination video game with lots of decisions about which path to take and plenty of awards to be won. Tomas was the player while Ben was the game designer. Ben took careful notes about the levels Tomas accomplished and awards he’d won. It was the best video game I’ve ever seen! And it kept the kids occupied for endless hours!!

Friday night however, the terrible storm hit hard. It down-poured ALL night. I’m still not sure how ALL the kids managed to sleep through it, but i know most of the adults were awake throughout the night, especially Mike and I as we knew our tent leaked at the front. At one point in the night, Mike pulled out an ikea bag to collect water at the front of the tent and move the few remaining dry things to the back of the tent. Needless to say, we were ready to pack it in Saturday morning. The kids wanted to stay though. I swear they are not affected by crappy weather!

So, the families who were there are our surrogate family here in Australia. They are the people we spend Christmas and Easter with, ski with, and now we’ve expanded to camping adventures! Here’s the list of these wonderful people who have been so kind to us orphans in Oz!

Family1:

  • Sam – Manager of government relations and who I swim train with2-3x per week
  • Emma – Marine biologist at UNSW, film star, and Mike’s collegue
  • Antonin – 4 years old, loves superheros and cars
  • Amilia – 9 years old, loves theatre performances

Family 2:

  • Rob – Evolutionary biologist at UNSW, author, and Mike’s collegue
  • Jacquie – Ecologist, loves owls, and my market buddy
  • Lily – 8 years old, loves theatre performances and crafts
  • Benny – 10 years old, loves video games, aircraft, and telling stories

Family 3:

  • Sean – Aboriginal rights social scientist at UNSW and author
  • Kate – A human rights consultant for the government and my bronze medallion mate
  • Darcy – 6 years old, likes a good run and exploring
  • Lara – 9 years old, loves riding a bike and theatre performances

The kids also did a performance for us that the girls designed. I thought it would be something cute but it was a scary one. Guess they are going for a new style! Anyway, the kids enjoyed doing it and so I thought I’d include it here. Click on link to view.

Easter Weekend

Posted: 1st April 2013 by Bethany in Holidays

Just when we thought the kids could not get any more chocolate, the next door neighbours, a lovely young couple brought treats for the kids, then later this weekend, our neighbour upstairs, our surrogate grandmum, brought more chocolate for the kids. They were in heaven! And after a few mishaps when the kids had too much chocolate, we quickly mitigated their intake and all was well Easter Weekend!

We started off the weekend with a trip to a new park that has a bike trail for kids with stop lights and other traffic signals. It’s super cute. Tomas road his bike for a while but then switched to his scooter which he is more comfortable on and so could go super fast! Ethan managed to keep up fairly well. Thank goodness for helmets! They also had a great playground that the kids enjoyed. Later Friday afternoon, we went to Rose bay, a small harbour north of us which we’ve never been to, to meet a couple friends who just had a baby and were about to move country…..hmmm sounds familiar!

Saturday we braved the Easter Show (well the small version anyway) held at Fox Studios. It has plenty of rides and games but also a large tent with farm animals to pet and cool attractions like a drumming circle and a giant maze. The kids even had their first taste of “fairy floss” (cotton candy to you Canuks) which they liked a bit too much!

The Easter Bunny visited that night and hid some chocolate eggs and bunnies for the kids and even ate some along the way. Sunday morning, Ethan woke up early as usual; the sun had not come up yet. But for some reason he bent down and managed to find an egg in the darkness! He must have a sixth sense for chocolate! Well that got the hunt started in a hurry! After scarfing down a bunch of chocolate, we took the kids to meet some friends at Wattamolla in the Royal National Park (one of our favourite spots). It is a gorgeous remote area with a quiet beach and a sand dune that separates it from a river estuary. There is a waterfall and lagoon within view – too fun! Tomas actually spent 4 HOURS in the water! I could not believe it! He only came out to wolf down some food, then went straight back into the water. We mostly hung around the river mouth as it was shallow enough for all the kids of various ages. Ethan, being the youngest, managed quite well!

That brings us to Monday….which you can imagine was spent doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!

Tomas goes to a disco party!

Posted: 11th March 2013 by Bethany in Outings

So Tomas was one of four boys invited to this very sheik birthday party and he loved it! After 2 hours of dancing he was still going! Ethan was there too but took about an hour to get in the dance mood but once his was in the groove there was no stopping him either!

Tomas starts kindergarten

Posted: 13th February 2013 by Bethany in Uncategorized

On January 31 Tomas attended his first day of kindie at coogee public school, located right across the street from us. Tomas was do excited as he had waited a long time for this day. He happily endured photos and hugs from Mike and i for a while…. then he was off, waving us good bye. He was the first kid to arrive in class. As soon as another kid arrived Tomas immediately introduced himself and said “let’s play”.  I knew from that moment he would be ok. Although I felt waves of emotion all day, I kept the tears at bay. He is so grown up!
