Snowy holiday

Posted: 17th August 2014 by Bethany in Holidays

So this July we went to Perisher ski resort, our favourite spot in the snowy mountain. We booked our trip for the week following school holidays so that we wouldn’t encounter too many people, but it was quite busy anyway. We lucked out with great snow conditions though- the best snow since the 1980s!! There was so much power that it felt like a completely different experience. Mike and I tried skiing this year which went really well. I had skied twice as a child so I knew the basics, but I suppose that after snowboarding over the past years, I picked it up quickly. And so did Mike, despite never skiing before!

The kids went to ski school for 5 days this time and they thrived there! Ethan started at novice level and ended up on level 4 (where Tomas was last year!). Mike and I saw him and his group while we were sitting on the chair lift! We couldn’t believe that little Ethan was skiing down the Village 8 (and had taken the chair lift to get there!).

Our last ski day, we took Tomas out of school at mid day and spent the arvo with our friends skiing. It was really good fun! All the big kids are skiing so well and kept up with one another – with Ben and Lily leading the way. Tomas really enjoyed that, I could tell.

I saw a new side of Tomas on this trip’ he is usually rather cautious but this trip he purposefully sought out spots where he knew there were jumps and gave them a go! He also skied really fast to the point that I had to hustle to keep up!!

In general, the kids had so much fun playing in the snow. They made, snow men and snow angels, had snow ball fights, and just slid down the nearest slope on their bottoms! There was that much snow! When we returned from our trip, Ethan dreamed about skiing, and still does occasionally. He’s desperate to go back! And so are the rest of us!

Meme’s visit

Posted: 6th August 2014 by Bethany in Holidays

In April, my mum, known as Meme (pronounced with a French accent aigu), came to visit for 3 weeks.

As our blog was on the fritz for the past few months, I have yet to post any photos from her trip, so here is the brief version of our 3 weeks together!

Meme arrived and we immediately drove north to Port Stephens for 4 nights and stayed in a lovely holiday home with a granny flat out back. It was a gorgeous spot – beautiful beaches, pelicans and a lovely hike through Tomaree National Park to the summit with amazing views (despite a trickle of rain). We even had a temporary pet as a neighbourhood cat had adopted us and hung around the whole time. The kids named her Rosie and were thrilled to experience life with a pet!

When we got back to Sydney, we spent a week doing day trips. We went to Centennial Park, the markets, walked along the coast and hung out at Coogee Beach. A few highlights included the “Incredible Eating Boy” theater production at the Opera House – the first play for the kids which was a huge hit. And the first time my mum had been inside the Opera House – also a hit. Another highlight was a coastal walk with the kids along Coogee Bay towards Maroubra when in the distance we spotted a pod of dolphins splashing about. It was great timing as we were due for a lunch break, so we sat on the rocky cliff and watched the dolphins jumping out of the water – what a treat. And the third highlight was a bit of mum and daughter time where we hiked the 6km between Coogee and Bondi Beaches. It had been 3 years since I did that walk and it felt great! We had a gorgeous sunny day for it, and really enjoyed our time together.

Our final hurrah was a dinner picnic at Coogee Beach – a bit early for that as the sun was setting at 5:45 or so, but we enjoyed it all the same in the dark!

May madness

It’s Autumn and funny enough there is a deciduous tree in our backyard that has shed its leaves. We waited for quite a while until a pile accumulated worthy of our attention….

And the collection begins with no end in sight! The source? The Liquidambar. Common planted street tree around Sydney. Also known as American sweet gum, an invasive species.

Jervis Bay -weekend holiday

Posted: 20th April 2014 by Bethany in Holidays

The last weekend of March my little family headed off to Jervis Bay for our final camping trip before winter. We packed up in the rain and anticipated loads of rain all weekend (the forecast said 90% every day!) for some reason we went anyway! It was raining when we arrived, but just a sprinkle. And our dear friends who arrived the day before had set up two massive tarps above our picnic and sitting area so we were set!

The kids played soccer in the rain – they weren’t bothered at all by it! Us adults managed ok too. some of us oped up the booze a bit earlier than usual…which probably helped! The next day though, the clouds had cleared, and so did the murky water. Beautiful aqua marine ocean and an empty beach was in store for us! Rob brought along his kayak and fishing poles which was good fun. Although at the sight of the first fish caught, Tomas broke down in tears. I guess the idea of fishing and releasing the fish appealed to him, but once he realized that we were going to eat these fish, he was a mess. i spent a long while soothing him and explaining how this is how our ancestors fed themselves – it was perfectly natural and that we were fishing in a sustainable way – using a pole and taking only adult fish the right size according to the department of fisheries guide. He calmed down but still wouldn’t eat the fish! The fish was yup! Rob and the older kids caught, salmon, bream and taylor fish. The bream (pronounced brim for some reason) was delicious!

The best part of the weekend for Mike and i was that that we enjoyed some adult conversation while the kids pretty much took care of themselves. The boys went off on bush-walks – led by Ben, the oldest, being 12. And the girls set up a spa where we could get massages, nails painted and a good foot soak! There were 4 other families, and 9 kids in total which meant lots of fun for all!

The kids enjoyed swimming in the ocean, kayaking, playing in the sand, and roasting marshmallows, playing with glow sticks and sparklers in the evening.
